Episode Info

Episode Info: On this week’s “Ecuador At Your Service” radio show on the Overseas Radio Network, Ashley & Michel interview Diane Lenz, Founder and President of Ecuador Cares. Diane talks about starting her non-profit organization and how – thanks to an army of volunteers and generous donations – her organization helped to save a Yunguilla orphanage from closing its doors last year. She also tells us about the organization’s new focus –Hogar Miguel Leon – a refuge in the center of downtown Cuenca that houses 31 orphans and 65 elders. Diane recounts programs being implemented by Ecuadorian and North American volunteers who are part of Ecuador Cares, that include support for young people who want to finish their education, a job placement program, a sex education program, and a halfway house for those turning 18 who will have to leave the center. The show focuses on the importance of volunteerism, working with local community leaders, about breaking the cycle of poverty, and how loving companionship for elders makes all the difference in these people’s lives. Additionally, Diane talks about the upcoming Noche de Gala – a fundraiser taking place at Hotel Oro Verde on November 10.
