Life Group Study Guide

Scripture: Luke 2:8-20

What are your favourite Christmas traditions? Is there something you are wanting to start as perhaps a new Christmas tradition? Tell your group about it…

1.    Was there something in this week’s teaching that particularly struck you or got you thinking?

2.    Read Luke 2:8-11. God sees the invisible! While its tempting today to romanticize shepherds as cute and noble, they were considered anything but back in this time. Shepherds were the marginalized and the ignored of their culture, unclean and unimportant. Who in our world today would be treated the same way?

3.    What does it say to you that God chose shepherds to be the ones who heard the news of the announcement of the birth of Jesus, rather than kings, or members of the ruling class?

4.    Read Luke 2:12-16.God includes the invisible! They didn’t just hear the message, they were given a personal invitation to see Jesus and meet his family in person! Who else got an invite like that?!? What does this say to you when you feel like you don’t have the right background, connections or influence to rise above your situation?

5.    Read Luke 2:15-20. God unleashes the invisible! In many ways, things hadn’t really changed much for the shepherds. They were still despised, distrusted, alienated and invisible to the people around them. But in another way, everything had changed – they were now agents and messengers of God, sent out to share the startling message of God-come-to-dwell-with-us. How do you think this affected them? How do you think the skepticism and mockery they were sure to hear from those who they met would have affected them over time?

6.    What can we do to encourage one another to see ourselves as God sees us: agents and messengers of God in our city, ministers of reconciliation, new creations, bearers of great news?

What is God saying to you from His Word? What are you going to do about it?
