1. Was there something in this week’s teaching that particularly struck you or got you thinking?

2. Who are some “OTHERS” in your life? Remember, The Other is an individual who is perceived by the group as not belonging, as being different in some fundamental way. Any stranger becomes the Other.

3. Read Matthew 18:12-14. When Jesus teaches about the Shepherd leaving the 99 to go and find the 1 lost sheep, he doesn’t speak at all about what sort of life that sheep was living, what sort of social sphere it was in or even the condition of it’s heart. What can we learn about showing compassion to The Other from this parable?

4. Just about everyone would say they have a heart for helping the marginalized. Lucas shared four characteristics of Jesus’ compassion:

• RELENTLESS – “I’ll do whatever it takes to help that person”
• RELIANT – “I’ll rely on the Living Water to provide the mercy I need”
• PURE – “I’ll lead a moral life so that I can help even more people”
• MISSIONAL – “I’ll do what I can to help more people experience the mercy of Jesus”

What would it look like for you to live these out in your life?

5. Read John 13:24. Jesus left his disciples with a new commandment, one much simpler than the many laws found in the Old Testament. What is it about “loving others” that seems so difficult? What is it about showing compassion and mercy to The Others that seems impossible sometimes? How can you get better at it?

What is God saying to you from His Word? What are you going to do about it?

What “wells” do you run to when you’re feeling dissatisfied? What would it look like to find contentment and satisfaction in Jesus instead?
