Episode Info

Episode Info: SHOW NOTES: David Cancel is about as close to the definition of a serial entrepreneur as you can get. Before embarking on his current project Drift, he has been at the helm of multiple successful startups, including the social network Bolt (which at its peak had over 5 million users pre-2000) and Performable which was acquired by Hubspot, where Cancel continued on as Chief Product Officer before starting Drift. In our little conversation, we get into the details of each of his past ventures and get granular into the lessons he learned in the process. This includes everything from thoughts on the importance of timing, to what a real enterprise sales process looks like, to the power of messaging as a medium.   Question of the Day: What was one book you've read in the past few months that you'd recommend David to read?    Time Stamps: How David first got into starting his first business, and what it was like to build a social network before the dot-com bubble - 3:00 What it was like to grow Bolt, and why he left the company to move to Boston - 6:00 The importance of timing when it comes to executing an idea - 16:00 A little more about Drift and what they do to empower the way you communicate with your customers - 21:00 The problem with the way online marketing works right now - 22:00 Why disruption has to be fueled on a paradigm shift in the market - 28:00 His experience building multiple tech companies right after the big tech bubble burst of the early 2000s - 32:00 A breakdown of what enterprise sales is really like - 38:00 What the 'first version' of Drift looked like - 48:00 David's advice on the subject of seeking funding - 59:00 On the capital demands of a SAAS startup - 1:06:00 The "Quick Questions" begin - 1:12:00 Links from the show:
