You can't spell !
Do your children come home from school STRESSED?
Our children are all under 11 and yet they seem to be tested and prodded constantly. What's going on? one of my children really struggles with spelling and phonics, when we try to help we witness a normally relaxed care free boy turn into a stressed and anxious child, burying his head into his arms on the table telling us he can't do it. As we talk about school and try to encourage him explaining how daddy was awful at spelling and grammar (and still is) but turned out okay, we discover that he is in the bottom group for Literacy and I think middle for Maths. This knowledge sparks of another conversation and we are amazed to learn that at only 7 he is aware of who's in the top group, the bottom group and so on. At 7 he is aware of labelling, who is a success and who is a failure..........ahhhhhh makes me so sad......is there no better way to learn.
I am passionate about education...coming from a rather difficult background I am only too aware the vital role education plays in making sure individuals can live full and rewarding lives and in turn contribute to society. However is this the way forward......where is the spontaneity, the fun, the joy of discovery?
For our latest podcast the inspiration comes from the spelling tests our children receive at school. We wanted to know what it feels like to be put under pressure. So dad 1 forces the other 2 dads to take a spelling test ....how do they do?
As the podcast develops things get a little more awkward when one of the dads after a few pints gives a spelling test to another dad who had only come round for a bit of dinner with his wife (he is not part of the 3dads). It transpired he was dyslexic....we only realised at the end ...awkward and a embarrassing on our part. Apparently it wasn't picked up when he was at school. However he was game and wanted his part released to show what its really like for someone who is dyslexic.
