This week on the We Grow Ours show, Nick and have Krystal Drinkwater with Big Cricket Farms. They have an amazing story and Krystal talks to us about crickets as food and we discuss other areas on the “farmstead” that crickets and bugs may fit in.
Big cricket farms can be found here: http://bigcricketfarms.com/ and you can order here: http://bigcricketgourmet.com/ you can also find thier great blog here: http://thebugconnection.com
Here is a little about them, We came to an economically depressed area of the United States in order to build a better, more sustainable protein source. After a brief tour of a number of different northeastern cities, we settled on Youngstown, Ohio - a beautiful city with a colorful past, a welcoming community, and a blooming revitalization effort moving the city towards a brighter future.
We didn't want to plunk down anywhere; we wanted to build a business in an area where it would create jobs and help support the people and the businesses around it.
We're dedicated to Tikkun Olam (a Hebrew phrase meaning "repair of the world") by working with the people who will make the future brighter than the past. When you buy from us, you're not just buying crickets, you're bringing money and jobs to a community in the first blossom of revitalization.
Here is a great video from their TEDx talk in Youngstown:

Fun podcast to learn about food security!!
These guys are great. I listened to every one of their existing podcasts on a road trip. Then I got my wife to listen to them all.
I've picked several things from both Nick and Don (I don't have an aquaponics system... YET) and I love the way they pass along the information without preaching or telling the listener that the way that they do it is the ONLY way it could be done.
The guests they have are always very informative, and the hosts share contact information of the guests in order to do further research and get more information.
If there was only one podcast about ways to grow your own food and gain some independence from the grocery store while decreasing the worry factor in case of a lost job or zombie apocalypse, this is the one that I would choose.

Perfect for the backyard farmer!
These guys walk the walk, they are growing their independence just like we do. They live in a neighborhood with HOA rules or on a smaller plot of land, unlike Jack "You're Doing It Wrong" Spirko, these guys are relatable.
This podcast is simply the best way to get information about how to start out with growing your own vegetables, livestock, and even how to grow the food for your livestock!
