Neuroscience: Quest to Understand the Mechanics of Innovation, Prodigies, Reality Perception, and More
According to scientists, neuroscience is in its infancy; perhaps comparable to our understanding of physics at the time of Galileo. We still clearly have a long way to go to fully comprehend physics, but the foundations of the human brain have just started to be understood.
Study of the human brain could lead to many fascinating discoveries and capabilities. For example, could we learn by downloading specific programming to a human brain? Early experiments with mice have shown that we can program a mouse's brain to understand a simple maze. Does this mean humans will eventually be able to learn to fly a plane (as seen in the Matrix movies) or perform advanced mathematics with this method?
Scientists at Stanford have arguable gone further by developing techniques to take over a mouse’s brain to control their actions (see here). Obvious ethical concerns crop up when you entertain the idea that our future may include the ability to control a human’s behavior and actions externally.
DARPA, the secretive research arm of the Department of Defense, may just be doing this. They are now implanting chips into solders’ brains in the hopes of enhancing battlefield performance and to repair traumatized brains (see here).
The research has moved so quickly; it is hard to imagine what the field will look like in a few decades. This episode of Business Game Changers we bring physicist and writer Ransom Stephens to discuss what we know about the human brain. We discuss how our brains process language, develop new innovations, manage different views of reality, and much more.
Future episodes we will be diving into the advanced technologies that are being developed by industry and our government.
RANSOM STEPHENS, PH.D. Bio:
Stephens is a physicist, science writer, and novelist, has written hundreds of articles on subjects ranging from neuroscience to quantum physics to parenting teenagers. His new book, The Left Brain Speaks The Right Brain Laughs (Viva Editions, 2016), is an accurate irreverent look at neuroscience for a lay-audience with emphasis on innovation in art, science, and life. Stephens has given thousands of speeches across the US, Europe, and Asia and has developed a reputation for making complex topics accessible and funny.
