TFP Episode 14: How Brendan Quit His Job Managing a Bowling Alley and Will Make Over $250,000 This Year

Brendan Zarhndt Brendan started out as a student of mine when I launched FBA Domination, my Amazon FBA program. This year, he will sell over $250,000 in products. He is preparing for the 4th quarter of 2016 which will be the busiest time of the year in his business. He might even do over $300,000 and is doing this in 30 hours a week or less. When I met Brendan, he was working as a manager at a bowling alley. When he got started with the FBA side of things, he treated it as a career and a real income. He was actually able to leave that job and earn his income from Amazon. Arbitrage - capitalizing on a market inefficiency. Example: you go to a retail store and see an item for sale less than the same item is selling somewhere else. In this case, we use Amazon. Brendan says he started with less than zero by going to Walmart and other retailers and finding clearance items which were cheaper than on Amazon. But, he found books to be very profitable especially when he went through books he had around the house. He started going to book stores, thrift stores and other places he could get books for under $1 and flip on Amazon. He sold one of his 1st books for $150. We even discussed buying books on Amazon to turn around and sell through Amazon’s FBA program. Used books sell very well on Amazon, not just new books. Retailers have limited amount of space to have products so they are under a great deal of pressure to sell and move inventory. Become the managers best friend. The manager calls Brendan to buy product with extra discounts so the manager can make a number for a bonus or some other reason. Ungating: Getting approved in categories where Amazon has restricted selling. This is actually a pretty easy process. Camel Camel Camel shows you selling price history on Amazon. It allows you to analyze the potential of a particular product for resale on Amazon. Keepa is another sales analysis tool. Amazon charges about 33-35% of the sales price for their fees. This is a cost of doing business but includes all customer service, shipping and marketing. You will have to pay inbound shipping to Amazon with FBA, but this gets charged to your account and is taken from your proceeds or credit card on file at a later date. Private Label is another option on Amazon. You buy an item and create your own brand and then sell it on Amazon. Groceries stores do this with their store brand items.
