The Metal Podcast #20 - Rex Brown
Rex Brown, renowned bassist for Pantera, Down and Kill Devil Hill, now going it solo with his debut album Smoke On This which hits the shelves at the end of July. We had a chance to talk with him about the new release and let’s just say our conversation didn’t go as planned, Rex was ready to talk his solo stuff, but our typical psychobabble seemed to be wasted on him. Still full of ‘piss and vinegar’ as he put it, he ran us through the ringer about what questions we should be asking, how many of these songs have been around for many years, his excitement getting to finally lay down this new music, playing guitar and singing for the first time, and generally telling us how much the album really ‘rocks.’ We also discuss whether a band should make their stage show interesting by doing rehearsed antics, just paying their instruments, spitting fire, sacrificing small woodland creatures or something else. Do creating particular moves or motions appear to be disingenuous? Is just watching a band play their music leave so much to be desired that we need flashy things and stuff to keep our attention? Is live music about the music, or the performance? Or both? Or is it a cases by case thing, where one band can’t pull off what another might?
