Studying sponges for biotechnological uses, led Shirley Pomponi onto the first U.S. vessel in 40 years on a trip to Cuba. During that five week trip, with her husband and film maker Al Geddes, both working on Forbidden Depths, the two-part documentary film for the Discovery Channel, she had the opportunity to discuss her work with President Fidel Castro. She's also a member of the Women Divers Hall of Fame.
