Episode 9 - What Rights do Content Creators Have Online?
As the use of eyewitness content grows, the media industry faces an increased risk of infringing copyright. There are a number of reasons for this – difficulty finding the original source of a piece of content, incorrect attribution online, media outlets’ limited budgets for accessing user generated content and the argument of fair use, under which some newsrooms may decide to use content without the express permission of the owner.
On this week’s podcast, host Della Kilroy is joined by Storyful’s Director of Legal Affairs – Emmet O’Grady, Global Video Editor – Shane Creevy, Content Licensing Coordinator – Jenny Scotson and Pol Seoige – a video creator whose content was used by a number of international media organisations without permission.
The panel discusses what rights video creators have online, how creators can protect their copyright, how copyright infringement can negatively impact the success of a piece of content and the steps that can be taken by an uploader if their content has been used without their permission under “fair use”.
