49: Road Concerns and Effective Cycling
This episode is brought to you by Phil's Fondo and Bike MS: Bay to Bay Tour.
Some feel disillusioned by the state of cycling in urban cities and on suburban roads. They wonder, 'is commuting worth the risk'? Since the California 3-foot law was implemented in 2014, there have been improvements in infrastructure in southern California, but this year it seemed we had some setbacks. We talk about some of our major concerns while road cycling, how we prepare for traffic, and why we continue to cycle amidst the risks.
Though one of our contributors, Rob Templin, suffered a serious neck injury from a cycling accident, we're happy to say that he is in good spirits and looking forward to being able to cycle again. Rob's advice after the crash? "Not that it has to be said but wearing a helmet saves lives, and never move someone after a serious bike crash ... especially if head/neck trauma is involved." Rob's article "Roam Free: An Experiential Guide to Ultralight Touring" was a featured story in issue #135 of the magazine.
