The Indispensable Thing
TODAY IS ASH WEDNESDAY and the beginning of our journey through Lent. These 40 days lead us to Easter and the celebration of our Lord’s Resurrection. Lent’s 40 days are a season of repentance. We turn from our sins and turn to God to love and serve him. Jesus suffered and died for our sins. He took the punishment we deserve, so we could be forgiven and become the children of God. The most profound mysteries of the Christian faith are front and center in Lent: sin and estrangement from God, atonement, forgiveness, justification by grace, reconciliation, and resurrection. May the Holy Spirit work in our hearts in this Lenten season through His Word and the Sacrament to strengthen our faith, increase our love for God, and fill us with the peace and joy of Christ.
The Lenten Sermon Series this year is based on the seven last words spoken by our Lord from the cross. In connection with each Word, we’ll also look at one of the petitions of the Lord’s Prayer. Tonight we hear Jesus say: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. This Word is correlated with the Fifth petition: And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Forgiveness is something we all need both to receive and to give. Forgiveness is The Indispensable Thing.
