RITO Podcast 6 - Mark Davis
This episode we talk with Mark Davis he talks about losing his partner Paul to suicide .Paul was a highly regarded health care professional and Mark shines light on the challenges that health care professionals face in the health care system, and the way Paul was cared differently in the system. How having an insider’s view of the system was detrimental to his mental health treatment outcomes. Mark discusses the unique situations same sex couples face when their partner dies by suicide and how the system viewed same sex couples over 10 years ago when there were little protection or official acknowledgement of same sex couples in the community or the law. Mark talks about how his loss was not met with the same level of empathy as other bereavement because he was in a same sex relationship and that Paul had died by suicide which compounded this. The feelings of isolation and detachment led Mark to the point of suicide, luckily a moment of clarity at the darkest time has inspired Mark to rebuild his life and become an activist for suicide prevention. Marks story is a compelling story that explores society’s changing views on same sex couple and suicide and how important the role of lived experience speakers is in suicide prevention. Thank you Mark for sharing your inspiring story with us.
