Professor Hinds gave the keynote at the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression 43rd Anniversary Human Rights Awards. He spoke about racist policing and the Federal, State and local conspiracy (COINTELPRO) used to destroy the Black Panther Party which in the 1960's was organizing for civilian control over the police departments that were terrorizing Black and Latino communities. CPAC, Civilian Police Accountability Council, the ordinance now before the Chicago City Council because of the dedicated organizing of the Chicago Alliance, would do just that, remove authority from failed Mayor Emanuel and place control in an elected civilian board. Professor Hinds speaks about the role of police in protecting the profits of the corporations and offers several routes to force corporate power to relinquish control. He comments on the dismal Human Rights voting record of the United States at the United Nations and an inadvertent path recently opened to hold our government to account before the world court through citizen led commissions that the US empowered when it signed the Human Rights Declaration.
