The Jonestown Suicides
In late 1978, a man named Jim Jones led his congregation in what may be the most notorious mass suicide in history. More than 900 people, many of them children, saw their lives ended on November 18th, bringing to a close the story of a cult leader and his followers that had spanned decades. Their actions led to the modern expression “drinking the Kool Aid.” These events occurred in a place called Jonestown, the unofficial name for The People's Temple Agricultural Project, a communist enclave for Jones's followers located in the nation of Guyana.
