For the third episode of the Get To Know podcast, we get to hear from defender Marvell Wynne @marvwynne22. Marvell has been one of my favorite players in MLS for a very long time. I first remember him from his time at Toronto FC and recall that he was the fastest and strongest player I had seen in MLS at the time. Couple this with my use of him in the FIFA video game franchise and the man has always had a legendary status in my personal rankings of MLS players. If you are unaware, Marvell is the son of a successful professional baseball player of the same name, Marvell Wynne Sr. From my standpoint, he may be one of the first examples of the son of a top American athlete playing soccer at a high level. While skill on the ball for any soccer player will always be up for debate, you will be hard pressed to find another player anywhere in the world who can beat Marvell in the areas of speed or strength. Marvell’s story is the first that we have that gives us a peak into MLS before the Designated Player era hit in 2007. For those of you who were fans before that time, you will be familiar with the unflattering opinion that plagued the league. Coming in as the #1 overall pick in 2006, Marvell saw MLS in the same light. We get to hear about his ascension from high school soccer to college. He tells us about the barrage of scholarship offers and school visits he had and how he made the decision to play at UCLA. From UCLA, we learn how he and some well-known college teammates got the opportunity to play for the U-20 national team and how that helped transform him into a professional soccer player. We also get to hear about his main hobbies. Gaming and cats. Overall, he was a joy to interview and I believe his story and demeanor will find a way to put a smile on your face.
