Chocolate hunting at the grocery store This week, I did my chocolate hunting at my local Tom Thumb Food & Grocery store. Tom Thumb is a chain of grocery stores in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex and is part of the Texas division of Safeway. I just discovered that the Tom Thumb distribution center is located right here in Roanoke, Texas. You might be surprised to find that some grocery stores carry a pretty good selection of chocolates. My local Tom Thumb is well-stocked with quite a few upscale brands. I picked three for today's show. The chocolate Green & Black's Organic Milk Chocolate with crunchy toffee pieces Made in Italy (part of Kraft Foods) 34% Cacao content 3.5 ounce bar (100g) for $3.79 Nice looking chocolate bar with a good, milk chocolate smell. Crunchy with a salty, toffee flavor. The toffee and chocolate flavors fight a little bit and, I think, the toffee wins. The finish is a good mix of chocolate and toffee. The flavors stay with you for a bit. Good chocolate bar, but nothing special. Newman's Own Organics Orange Dark Chocolate 54% cacao 3.25 ounces (92g) for $3.49 Nice looking dark chocolate with a hard snap. The smell is orange peel. Dark chocolate usually doesn't have much of a smell. First flavor is orange. As the chocolate melts, the rich dark chocolate flavor comes on strong. The flavors go back and forth between the orange and chocolate. There is a tiny bit of bitterness to the chocolate that disappears before the finish. This is a very rich and satisfying chocolate bar for fans of dark chocolate and orange. sweetriot Pure 70% Dark Chocolate with Kickin' Coconut Made in Italy 3.5 ounces (100g) for $3.99 Good solid snap. The smell is rich cocoa. Takes a while to melt on the tongue. Flavors come slowly. Has that slightly bitter dark chocolate flavor. There isn't a lot of coconut in the chocolate and there isn't much coconut flavor, either. I wouldn't call it "Kickin' Coconut". A very subtle dark chocolate bar. You really have to take your time with this bar to appreciate it. Recommended for fans of chocolate with high cacao content. Results All three bars are for special tastes: they are very good for their intended audiences. If you like milk chocolate and toffee, the Green and Black's Organic is a good choice, but maybe a bit expensive. If you enjoy dark chocolate and orange, the Newman's Own Organics is very satisfying. For fans of dark chocolate, the sweetriot dark chocolate is quite enjoyable.
