On this episode of Cigars and Sea Stories Mike is sitting down with Jim Rashella, Marine veteran and co-founder of “Off Duty Blue”. Jim Raschella is a Marine Corps veteran from Syracuse, New York. He was born to be an entrepreneur, from selling tickets to his backyard carnival as a child, to dreaming up multi-million dollar companies—Jim’s ambitions have always been as limitless as his creativity. After graduating high school in 2004, Jim joined the Marine Corps Reserve where he served as a mortar gunner at Echo Co. 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion in Syracuse, NY. At the age of 21, Jim founded a watersports school serving the Finger Lakes in Upstate New York. After 2 successful years, he was deployed to Iraq and upon returning home, decided to pursue other business options. While deployed, he and fellow Marine, Mark Grady, would often talk about establishing a joint business venture in the future. After separating from the Marine Corps, Mark pursued a career in law enforcement and Jim began working on a degree in business. It wasn’t until 2013 while watching a football game, that a 30 second preview for a news story changed everything. The news report covered an “off-duty police scandal” where several officers from Mark’s department had been arrested for allegedly falsifying timesheets. This spurred a conversation regarding the effective management of off-duty details, as well as how and why the discrepancies occurred. It turned out that the department’s off-duty scheduling was being poorly mismanaged. After many long nights of brainstorming, developing, and scrutinizing the details surrounding scheduling and efficiency, Jim and Mark created Off Duty Blue. Jim serves as Off Duty Blue’s Chief Executive Officer. Over the past 3 years, Jim has proudly overseen the company’s transformation from scribbles in a notebook, to the most comprehensive special event and detail management software platform available on the market.
