Episode 11: Lynnette Marrero
This week on Speaking Broadly, host Dana Cowin is joined by Lynnette Marrero, co-founder of Speed Rack.
In 2011, Marrero and her partner Ivy Mix decided to make an impact on the world around them. Already leading ladies in the bartending world, Lynnette and Ivy recognized that they had an opportunity to do much more. The bartending world tends to be a male-dominated field. After a casual conversation in which the two bartenders lamented the lack of community amongst the females in their profession, Lynnette and Ivy decided it was time to shine a spotlight on women mixologists thriving behind bars around the country – and do so while giving back to the important cause of breast cancer research, education, and prevention. And with that mission in mind, Speed Rack was formed in February 2011.
In 2015, the tour expanded globally to Canada and continued efforts in the U.K., making Speed Rack the one and only all-female international bartending competition. As a result of their work, Lynnette and Ivy received Wine Enthusiast’s 2016 Wine Star Award for “Mixologists of the Year,” and were named “Most Innovative Women in Food & Drink” in 2015 by Food & Wine and Fortune magazines.
Lynette is currently the National Brand Mixologist for Perrier Sparkling Natural Mineral Water and San Pellegrino Sparkling Fruit Beverages, in addition to working with lauded Guatemalan brand, Zacapa, as the Trade Educator and Mixology Ambassador. Lynnette is a founding member and current President of the New York City chapter of LUPEC (Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails). She helms the beverage programs for high-profile culinary events Taste of the Nation NYC and City Meals on Wheels, was honored by the James Beard Awards as one of America’s Leading Female Mixologists in 2009, and in 2010, as Beverage Director at Rye House, won Time Out Eat Out Awards for Best New Cocktail Bar, and Best Bar Restaurant Hybrid.
