579: Why Finance Needs More Humanity, and Why Humanity Needs Finance
< 1 day ago
·
29 minutes
Mihir Desai, professor at Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School, argues for re-humanizing finance. He says the practice of finance, with increasing quantification, has lost touch with its foundations. But he says finance can be principled, ethical, even life-affirming. And demonizing it or ignoring it means that the rest of us – those not in finance – risk misunderstanding it, which has all kinds of implications for how we make decisions and plan for our futures. Desai is the author of the new book, "The Wisdom of Finance: Discovering Humanity in the World of Risk and Return." He also writes about finance and the economy for hbr.org.

Difference between steel mills & consulting firms
Great insights!
McKinsey & other top firms must constantly increase profitability by increasing the complexity & size of their projects. Disruptive upstarts outbid them in lower "value" business, and constantly push upwards.
There is a difference between steel mills and consulting though. The work that McKinsey does, is done purely by their employees. The client knows that too. When their employees leave to partner with the disruptor... the change can be hastened, especially if the disruptor figures out how to assemble teams.

Excellent show
As usual, this is another one of HBR IdeaCast's excellent and interesting shows. The topics are very thoughtful and very timely. I always enjoy listening to the shows because of the clarity of the discussions - they're easy to follow and the length of the shows are just right.

Always informative
The best names, not just in business, all around. Insightful, direct, and with little of the color and fluff you often find in podcasts (for better or worse). Advice, to the point--through experience.

To say the least, HBR is fantastic
I love HBR more than I can articulate. In our ever busy worlds I will occasionally get a chance to listen and actually come away from it with some useful knowledge which is never the case any more.
