Welcome to my new podcast: Medicine with passion. It is dedicated to help you take your medical career to the next level. It doesn’t matter whether you are in medical school or are finishing up your residency training. If you work in medicine and aspire to take your career to the next level: This podcast is for you! I will cover different topics on medical careers, namely getting the best practical education possible finding a mentor organizing your workflow work-life balance in medicine meeting the expectations of your patients, your boss and the nurses. You can download it via Itunes or RSS, also you can listen to it online. In this first episode I talk about how you can learn almost any skill during your next internship. This takes both preparation and effort - but it can be done. I have completed many internships that just passed by. I attended, I observed, but I didn’t really learn anything. Later when I started preparing systematically for my rotations I acquired skills that I can use to this day. Here I share my 4 tips for learning almost any skill during your next rotation: 1. Decide, what you want to learn. Read and inform yourself about the specialty of the department you are going to do your internship in. Choose a skill that they are actually good at. Be realistic and ambitious about it. 2. Prepare: Read and watch all about that skill. Learn technical details you need to perform that procedure. 3. Tell your mentor about your plan. Many mentors will be so busy, they won’t even ask you, what you would like to learn, while you are here. 4. Be of assistance. If you help your mentor, he will have more time (and feel the obligation) to teach you that skill. I would especially love to answer your questions. Or better: do you have a topic you want me to cover during my next podcast? Just leave me a voicemail, send me an email or leave a comment below. I will get back to you, I promise!
