ComicsVerse celebrates June 2017 LGBTQIA+ Pride Month with our in-depth podcast on Homosexuality in Comics. ComicsVerse CEO Justin Alba joins panelists Tim O’Reilly (ComicsVerse Writer), Madeleine Slade (Independent Comics Editor), Lindsey Mott (Independent Comics Editor), Rachel Davis (Independent Comics Editor), and Marius Thienenkamp (ComicsVerse Writer) to discuss their first-hand experiences having queer identities. Although the episode’s focus lies on the representation of homosexuality in (mostly American superhero) comic books, we consider it important to be as inclusive as possible. Therefore, we made sure to delve a bit deeper into the wide range of queer identities that exist under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella. While we discussed our first-hand experiences and considered the perspectives of as many other queer folks as possible, we manage to delve into the very definition of gender and sexual identity, how they develop, and their implications. Those who remain skeptical about other genders than female and male -- we hope we can convince you otherwise! Subsequently, we examined various instances of queer representation in comic books over the course of time. How are gay, bi and trans people represented today? What shaped queer experiences in the previous century? We discuss that and more. In addition to certain problematic depictions, we found many other instances refreshing, progressive, and a definite step in the right direction. Don't take my word for it, listen for yourself!
