If you have been following us for the past few months you may know that my interest in the Ketogenic Lifestyle has grown from a simple curiosity to full blown lifestyle. The podcast has been a great way for me to learn more about the keto way of life, as well as opposing views of this lifestyle or way of eating. While I subscribe to this way of life my co-host Ben takes a more flexible approach to diet as he implements the If It Fits Your Macros way of lie when it comes to his nutrition. I think we balance each other out nicely.
I think it is important to note, that if your goal is simply weight loss, there isn't one magic approach you must follow in order to hit your goals when it comes to the scale. It will always come down to calories in versus calories out. All things being equal (when it comes to protein and calories) there has been no scientific evidence yet showing keto is a superior form of diet for weight loss.
It goes deeper for me and for most of the people that adopt the Ketogenic Lifestyle. It is about an improved lifestyle when we become “fat adapted”. Our ability to fast for 8, 16, or even longer amounts of time gives a sense of freedom, that for most of us, we didn’t have when our blood glucose would spike and our stomachs would growl shortly thereafter.
For me it is the links between metabolic diseases like cancer and type II diabetes that have lead me to dig into keto. My family history proves that these diseases are a real concern for me, and frankly I want to do everything I can to make sure I live a long, fulfilled life.
This week we decided to dig in the Ketogenic lifestyle, and I couldn't think of anyone better to have on than Megan Saylor!
Megan is a mother of two with an incredible history that includes overcoming substance abuse, combating PTSD, and becoming an all around outstanding human. She adopted the Ketogenic diet just over 6 months ago and was gracious enough to spend some time with us today to tell us how she did it and why she thought this lifestyle was a great fit for her.
We discuss things like:
Where she goes to find great recipes that help her remain fat adapted
Resources she used to learn more about the Keto diet
Supplements she uses or doesn't use to make sure she is hydrated and getting the correct amounts of Omega 3s
How and why she monitors her blood glucose and ketone levels
I hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did and be sure to follow Megan on Instagram at ht
