Episode Info: Coach Jim Johnson has an amazing story to tell. A basketball coach for 33 years, Coach Jim had an inspiring event happen on February 15, 2006 when he let Jason McElwain (J-Mac), a student with autism, play in the last game of the season, Senior Night of Jason's senior year in high school. This story has become the basis for Coach Jim Johnson's book, A Coach and a Miracle: Life Lessons from a Man Who Believed in an Autistic Boy. During the month of April, Coach Jim contributes a portion of the sales of his book from his website, CoachJimJohnson.com, to AutismUp, a program for autistic children in the Rochester, New York area where they live. Jason's dream was to be on the varsity team and play in a game. He spent years practicing and preparing for this opportunity in case it happened. It's hard to describe what happened during that game. The coach put Jason in the game during the last four minutes of the game. Unbeknownst to Coach Jim, a student had made placards with Jason's face on them and everyone held them up when he came onto the court. Tears started streaming down Coach Jim's face as he had to sit from being overcome with emotion. Jason's team members started feeding him the ball - and no one else. After missing the first two shots, he started scoring. In fact, he scored the winning point during the last ten seconds of the game and was named the high scorer for the game with 20 points, including six 3-point shots. The crowd, as they say, went wild! Luckily, this "Miracle Night" was caught on video and you can watch that here: http://youtu.be/ngzyhnkT_jY Today, Coach Jim Johnson is still coaching high school basketball and Jason is still the team manager of the Varsity team.
