The Netflix series Orange is the New Black is in no way a “Black" show. It doesn’t have a Black show runner and it has no Black writers. But its multicultural cast features a handful of brilliant black actresses and is a draw for many Black viewers. Shortly after season four premiered, I saw lots of people who express outrage about the shows narrative choices.
I talked to freelance writer Ashleigh Shackelford to talk about her essay "Orange is the New Black is Trauma Porn Written for White People" and what what the show gets wrong.
