It was the most dangerous argument of the entire 1990’s. A debate so bitter, it caused friends to fight each other to the death. Which was better Street Fighter 2 or Mortal Kombat. Both released in the UK in 1995, their cinematic incarnations are put to the test. It’s Lambert vs Van Damme in a fight to the finish.
Legendary Arcade and Super Nintendo fight ‘em up Street Fighter 2 was so successful, it spawned countless imitators, practically creating a whole gaming genre. Mortal Kombat was a very different kind of fighter from its Japanese counterparts. Switching from hand-drawn sprites to digitised characters, and shot through with dark humour, it was more notorious for its controversial blood and gore fatalities. Could writer/director Paul Anderson deliver a film to satisfy its fans, but appease the parents of its tweeny audience? Will Talisa Soto avoid the curse of the Bond Girl? And will it be an ice shattering Sub Zero, or just sub-standard?
