Discovering the Tropicana Gold Deposit
Sep 20 16
On this first episode of Geoscience Radio, we look at the geology, exploration and discovery of the Tropicana gold deposit. The deposit is currently owned by AngloGold Ashanti and Independence Group NL and has been in production (open pit mining) since 2013. The story begins in 1993 with the discovery of the Voisey's Bay magmatic nickel - copper - cobalt deposit in Canada. Following this discovery, Western Mining Corporation began searching for analogous regions in Western Australia and pegged an area named the Pleiades Lakes project. The deposit is located within the Albany Fraser Orogen (AFO) around 330 Km northeast of Kalgoorlie and represents one of Western Australia's more recent major greenfields gold discoveries. Mineralisation is hosted within amphibolite and granulite facies syenitic gneisses within the Plumridge Terrane of the AFO with gold mineralisation controlled by a network of discrete high-strain shears which parallel gneissic banding.
