About This Show
Full readings of stories from the early days of horror literature and weird fiction. Gothic, ghostly, ghoulish, or gruesome - from H.P. Lovecraft and M.R. James to pulp shockers and Victorian penny dreadfuls.
I am Adrian Ward, ES (Alds), 51st Vice Chancellor of the University of Aldergate, invalid, human parasite, and lover of bizarre and macabre fiction. I have developed a deep affection for things better left alone ... and I would like to share them with you.

Episode 9: Casting the Runes, by M.R. James
M.R. James - a Cambridge man, though of course we don’t hold that against him - is widely regarded as a leading master of the ghost story. His first collection, Ghost Stories of an Antiquary, contains many gems of the genre. Its sequel, which includes the story I’d like to share with you, was published in 1911 under the title ‘More Ghost Stories’. Not an especially creative title, nor entirely accurate, for ‘Casting the Runes’ is not what one might conventionally think of as a ghost story. It is, however, an undeniable masterpiece of the occult. Of that which is, or should be, kept well-hidden. I do hope that you enjoy it.
